Homewares Store Didriks Now Carries Bob Kramer and Miyabi Knives - Virtual-Strategy Magazine (press release) (registration) (blog)

Independent homewares store has added Bob Kramer and Miyabi knives to their already extensive knife offerings. Now available online and in stores. Cambridge, MA (PRWEB) July 09, 2015. Independent homewares store Didriks has expanded their knife offerings to include Miyabi and Bob Kramer knives, two stunning ranges that combine German steel with Japanese craftsmanship to create blades of... Both ranges are inspired collaborations with premium cutlery giant Zwilling J. A. Henckels, using advanced technology and hand finishing to create high-performance blades in their factory in Seki, Japan. Zwilling J. A. Henckels partnered with American master bladesmith Bob Kramer to develop balanced, powerful knives with excellent craftsmanship. His trademark wide blades and large handles are ideal for those prefer greater clearance or have large hands. Kramer's designs are executed in both carbon steel and damascus stainless steel, both materials designed to hold and maintain a razor-sharp edge. The Miyabi range consists of several collections in both Asian and hybrid styles, each inspired by a prominent Japanese chef. For traditional Asian silhouettes try the Birchwood SG2 and Kaizen collections, both featuring 101 layers of damascus steel and an elegant round handle. For hybrids, Japanese blades with a western grips, look at the Pro, Fusion, and 600S Red collections. Whatever the task, these ranges offer a knife that is sure to become a favorite. Collections from both ranges are now available in store and online at didriks. About Didriks. Didriks showcases fine outdoor furniture, tableware and home decor products sourced from the United States and Europe. Online at Didriks. Didriks is located at 190 Concord Ave. on Observatory Hill in Cambridge and at The Mill at Newton Lower Falls, 2284 Washington St. For the original version on PRWeb visit: http://www. com/releases/2015/06/prweb12782006. Earthy Vibe - Hour Detroit Magazine

nn Arbor is home to the University of Michigan, a world-renowned educational institution. But to find the city’s warm heart and earthy soul, a visit to another institution, Downtown Home & Garden, is worth the trip. Located in a decidedly muscular building in the business district, Downtown Home & Garden is a gardener’s delight in the spring, a joyous celebration during the holiday season, and a wonderful mélange of practical, fun, and luxurious products... Built in 1906 and originally for farmers in horse-drawn wagons, the building features a real drive-through. Today families in SUVs enter the building, park and shop, and then leave through one of two exits. Not a parking meter in sight. Whether you drive into the barn or walk into the store, you’re likely to be greeted by Mark Hodesh, who has lovingly shaped the store to reflect his bone-deep commitment to Ann Arbor. He has guided the store through recessions — and overcome trends of online shopping and big-box stores — while keeping the store relevant, vital, and distinctly Ann Arbor. Picture old-time knife sharpening side by side with organic garden supplies, and you get a gist of the vibe. Although Hodesh recently transferred store ownership to a handpicked successor, Kelly Vore (a trusted employee since 2010) he’s not going anywhere. He retains ownership of the building, runs Mark’s Carts, a collection of eight food carts behind the store, and has a 50 percent interest in Bill’s Beer Garden. Hodesh first took root in downtown in 1972 when he founded the Fleetwood Diner, another Ann Arbor institution right across Liberty Street. He put down his taproot in 1975 when he bought Hertler Bros. , once a livery stable and feed mill. “When I first walked into the barn it was dark and uninviting,” Hodesh recalls. “A string of three light bulbs hung across the ceiling. the roof leaked. But the building had a dark mystery that I loved from the first day. From 1975 to 1980, he successfully transformed Hertler Bros. from a farm store to an urban garden retail store. So successful, Raupp’s Campfitters made him an offer he couldn’t refuse: They bought the business and signed a 15-year lease for the building. Raupp’s eventually sold the business, and in 1997 Hodesh and the new owners could not agree on terms. They took the name, inventory, and fixtures — leaving Hodesh a big, empty building. The seed for Downtown. Source: www.hourdetroit.com

A cut above: Sharp knives are a home cook's greatest tool - MiamiHerald.com

The metal-on-metal swoosh-swoosh sound of cooks honing their knife blades on steel rods keeps a near-constant rhythm in Tom Azar’s kitchen at the Lauderdale Yacht Club. Keeping knives sharp, straight and nick-free is a smarter way to cook than using dull blades, Azar said. “You’ll work twice as hard with a dull knife,” said Azar, executive chef of the private Fort Lauderdale club who formerly cooked at Emeril’s in Miami Beach and City Hall the Restaurant in Miami. “A sharp knife gives you cleaner cuts,” making you work more efficiently. Plus, he said, a blunted blade can lead to injury-causing slips. “A dull knife will hack up everything,” Azar said. While cutlery experts, restaurant chefs and experienced home cooks suggest routine DIY touch-ups with a honing steel and sharpener, they also recommend periodic professional sharpenings. For most at-home cooks, twice-a-year visits to the sharpening shop (see box) will leave blades so fresh and fine-tuned that they remind us what a joy it is to chop, cube, slice and dice. In the market for new knives. German and Japanese brands known for their quality, value and reliability include Wüsthof, Shun, Zwilling J. A. Henckels and Global. And four kinds of blades that should be in any set are a chef’s knife, a serrated knife, a paring knife and santoku knife. (See box for details on each. No matter whether you have a new set of knives or ones just back from a sharpening, proper storage can greatly extend their lives. Keep in mind:. Source: www.miamiherald.com
