If sitting at the dinner table with cutlery and napkins in tow has got a little tiresome, then you might want to check out London's latest culinary venture: Supper Tub. Nestled on the banks of a quaint canal in Hackney Wick, London, the outdoor water-themed restaurant is proving to be a big hit with bookings quickly filling up. As the name suggests, diners are invited to spend two hours soaking in a hot tub while... In total, the experience costs £25 per person. The ticket price includes a place in the eight-seater tub - leaving opportunity to strike up some entertaining conversation - with food and drinks billed separately. Luckily we arrived before the crowds started gathering at 7pm. On arrival, we were swiftly shown the changing rooms and given some funky Hugh Hefner-style robes to wear over our swimming costumes. We were also given flip flops to protect our feet on the wood ship-inspired decking. Towels came in at an extra £4 - so remember to bring your own. Once ready, my two friends - Chris and Brent - and I took the plunge. The first thing we noticed was the lack of bubbles in the water and more importantly, the absence of 'eau de chlorine'. The mastermind behind Supper Tub, Adam Taffler, told us he spent months doing market research to find the perfect hot tub. He finally plumped for solid cedar baths which take 90 minutes to warm up and are powered by wood burners. Adding to the eco-friendliness, Adam fires up the soakers with wood that would otherwise be going to the skip. It felt pretty good taking a soak, especially after a long day of traipsing around the city in sticky hot weather. As we settled in, the food started rolling out, with delights including ceviche canapes, king prawns, steak skewers and watermelon balls. To prevent spillages, nibbles were secured to wooden boards with dabs of honey or sauce. To wash it all down, a delicious mix of cocktails were also on the menu. Our favourites included the morish Ginger. Source: www.dailymail.co.uk
And hopefully one day soon it may be able to mix in the rarified protected status company of Champagne, Parma ham and its delicious Angus neighbour, the Arbroath smokie. But for now the humble Forfar bridie can at least claim to actually be a prize pasty after an ingenious stroke of imagination by a town trophy shop owner and a talented woodturning friend. People passing by the Tannadice Trophies shop of Jim Keillor in the Angus burgh’s East High Street have been doing a double take over the latest edition to the shop’s display – a wooden trophy bridie which is a complete ringer for the tasty real... And alongside is a hand-turned wooden haggis which Jim revealed started the mini-craze for the quirky awards. “A wee while back two American ladies came in asking if I could sell them a haggis trophy and although I didn’t have such a thing it got me thinking,” said Jim, who took over the busy shop seven years ago. He put the idea to Angus pal Bob Harrow, whose skills produced the first wood-turned haggis to grace the display cabinet. With plenty time to come up with new ideas as he sits over the engraving machine carving Angus winners’ names on to trophies from across the globe, Jim then thought the famous Forfar bridie deserved to become an award as well as an award-winner. Either mounted on a wooden shield or sitting in a silver platter alongside cutlery and sauce, the wooden creation has tickled passersby. “The bridies have really captured people’s imagination,” he added.
