The battleground that is the dishwasher - Independent Online

London - A plate that hasn’t been rinsed, a pot that has been shoved in willy-nilly…many a marital row has arisen over how to load the dishwasher properly. But now there could be an end in sight - as appliance-maker Bosch has issued some definitive guidance to try to help resolve the battles. So, argument number one: should you pre-rinse your crockery. It’s a victory for those speedy stackers who load straight in, as Bosch says you should scrape off big lumps of food but not pre-rinse too much. This is because the enzymes in dishwasher cleaners need a surface to get to grips with, apparently. Next, glasses and cups should be placed in at angles to stop water pooling on their flat surfaces and then dripping down when it comes to unloading. Plates should be stacked by size, facing the same way, if you want them to come out sparkling, and don’t mix them with pots and pans or they won’t clean as well. Plastic containers clean fine as long as they are dishwasher safe, but must be placed away from the heating element or they will melt. Knives are best placed with the handles up - for safety during unloading more than anything - although in newer designs cutlery is placed flat. And mixing knives, forks and spoons is a good idea as it prevents the same types of cutlery “nesting” together, which would stop water reaching dirty areas. But whether stubborn spouses will listen to the advice or stick to their existing - and often very firmly held - views on dishwasher etiquette remains to be seen. Lisa Coombes, 49, from Bristol, said of her 67-year-old husband Mike: “He will rarely load the dishwasher but when he does, he always gets it wrong. I may as well just do it myself. The mugs and bowls have to go on the top shelf, with the plates going in height order below. He just chucks it in and I have to reload it all the time. It’s so frustrating. If you don’t load it properly it will come out unclean. ” Mr Coombes, a retired plumber, said: “As long as I load it, I don’t see why it matters. The reason it doesn’t come out clean is because it is not rinsed properly. “You have to rinse it. Then you can throw it in however you like. Dishwashers don’t have to be loaded in such an organised way. ” John Marshall, 34, an electrician from Birmingham who has two children with wife Rebecca, 36, said: “I like to rinse the plates before loading so you don’t get beans and peas flying around the washer but. To know whether a product or startup is in this category—which I’m confident will see a shakeout leaving few standing—just look for this phrase in their marketing materials: “The world’s first smart. The world’s first smart socks. The world’s first smart toothbrush. The world’s first smart plate, cup, fork, cutting board, stove knob, jump rope,. Source: www.wsj.com
