A ruthlessly anti-Communist Pole escapes to Paris in the 1960s and ends up fighting the Soviets alongside the mujahideen in Afghanistan in the 1980s in The Magic Mountain , a mixed-media animated film from Romanian director Anca Damian . The... After twin premieres at Annecy and Karlovy Vary, this beautifully assembled but narratively diffuse Mountain will move on to other festivals but faces an uphill battle for any kind of commercial release beyond Romania, Poland and France, where the... The film dives straight into the turbulent life of Adam Jacek Winkler (voiced by Christophe Miossec in the French version, Jean-Marc Barr in the English version), a free spirit who left Poland during the Communist era for Paris, where he worked as... Several of his family members were killed in the 1940 Katyn Massacre by the Red Army, when he was just two years old, which seems to have instilled a lifelong hatred of the Communists. These facts need to be distilled from a very messy first couple of reels, which is light on facts -- the significance of Katyn is not explored or contextualized, for example -- and which instead unfolds as a series of back-and-forths between Adam... The early going is somewhat structured by a list of the rules of survival -- “Rule one: Don’t die, if possible” --though like Anna’s comments, or the character of Anna’s mother, who ends up in prison when trying to smuggle things back into Poland,... Things start to get smoother when, in 1979, the Soviets invade Afghanistan and Winkler takes that age-old adage about the enemy’s enemy being your friend to extreme heights, finally traveling there, after several years of preparation, to fight... The character’s singular focus on just surviving from day to day in the mountains of Afghanistan, where he ends up fighting alongside. Source: www.hollywoodreporter.com
History buffs soon will have more opportunities to learn about the Cape Girardeau of yesteryear as the Red House Interpretive Center expands its offerings. The Red House, which opened in 2003, provides a living chronicle of the river, Cape Girardeau's settlement and its development over time. Its displays include everyday items such as cutlery, musketballs and hatchets, as well as official documents, such as census records and slave-trade ledgers. And volunteers in period-accurate costumes such as Debra Baughn, called docents, are on hand to answer questions. But soon, a stockade, an ox cart, blacksmith's shop, beehive oven, dugout canoe and an expanded speakers' series are being developed. "We're really excited," Baughn said. "Our whipping post and stocks will be ready soon. Although the Red House in downtown Cape Girardeau is affiliated with Cape Girardeau's Parks and Recreation Department, Baughn pointed out it's self-supported through museum admission fees and donations. It's not a large operation, and relies heavily on volunteer work. "We have about 10 or 12 [docents] on our list," docent director Anne Hutson explained. And what the river giveth, the river can taketh away. This summer's flooding likely will mean less foot traffic from riverboat travelers, as riverboat schedules have been disrupted. Hutson said the lack of riverboat patrons means several hundred dollars in missed revenue. "It's huge for us," she said. But they hope new attractions, such as community breadmaking in an old-style oven, might help mitigate the loss. Stan Downs, who was involved with the log cabin's construction over a decade ago, said the new projects have given him an opportunity to get more involved with the Red House. "Right now, we're looking for a log about 30 inches in diameter or a little bigger and at least 12 foot long," he said, explaining how he plans on building the dugout canoe using period-accurate carpentry techniques. "A good canoe maker would be able to make one in a week," he said. "It might take us a little bit longer. I really enjoy working with it. ". The stockades are expected to be installed within the next couple of weeks. While some of the projects might take longer than others, Baughn said the Red House has been seeing good traffic lately and is looking to build on it. "We feel like we're still coming up with new ideas," she. Source: www.semissourian.com
Already stung by accusations that his presidential palace in Ankara is a megalomaniac folly, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is facing new claims of wasteful extravagance. But this time the controversy does not surround a grand new building but a humble table set for the traditional fast-breaking iftar meal for the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. The circular table, however, is perhaps not so humble. The size of a squash court, it is so vast as to be impossible to have a conversation with the person at the other end. The Ankara Architects' Chamber -- a frequent critic of Erdogan over the palace -- gave an itemised valuation of the table, chairs, and ornaments, saying they were worth one million lira ($375,000). The presidency however rubbished the suggestion,... "All these figures, stated per item, are wrong and a lie, all these claims are merely slander," Erdogan said in a speech late Wednesday. "We know their intentions and a full account will be given before the law," he added. The controversy erupted on Monday when the presidency published pictures of Erdogan and two dozen religious figures and scholars seated around the table for the iftar meal. Seated as the head of the table, the president was only vaguely discernable from the other end. Similar images emerged after an iftar meal Wednesday evening with municipal chiefs, with social media ablaze with suggestions over what to put in the vast empty space in the middle. Some suggested a vast pizza, others that there was ample space for a traditional oil-wrestling match. Meanwhile, the presidency took the hugely unusual step of issuing a one minute time-lapse video showing that officials at the palace assembled the table out of several smaller ones with a round table at the centre. It then shows the white-jacketed palace officials sweeping the table clear and adding a vast table cloth and cutlery. Erdogan said the tables used for the giant table were merely heirlooms from the 1993-2000 presidency of Suleyman Demirel, who died earlier this month. The chairs, meanwhile, were purchased under his predecessor Abdullah Gul. Erdogan's new $615 million presidential palace in the outskirts of Ankara, which has 1,150 rooms, has for opponents become a symbol of authoritarian tendencies. The president insists however it's a worthy symbol of the. Source: uk.news.yahoo.com
