All's fair at the fair decorating contest. It's a shark pit! - OCRegister

Vestibulum tortor quam, feugiat vitae, ultricies eget, tempor sit amet, ante. Donec eu sit amet quam egestas semper. Example link to graphic lightbox. Plastic great white sharks. Humans to roast. I had everything I needed to organize my table Tuesday for the Orange County Fair’s annual table-setting contest, except the most crucial item: a ruler. You see, you need a ruler when you move in your table-setting exhibit so you can precisely measure distances from the cutlery to the table’s edge. If you’re wrong, you’re disqualified. Oh, well, I was really just amusing myself anyway with my entry. The theme I’d been assigned, along with other contestants, was “Beach Party. Not much of a stretch in Southern California, right. If we can’t decorate a table for a beach party, we should all be deported from Orange County. But I’ve always been one to hear that distant drummer, the one that’s vaguely out of tune. That’s why I’ve twisted the themes now for three years running. The first year I entered the contest, I looked in my cupboards and realized I had a lot of Mason jars and chipped dishes. I guess that meant my entry should be “Hillbilly Holiday,” with a menu that included squirrel guts and possum stew. Last year, based on a scientific survey of people who read my column, I decided to go with a zombie theme. That meant zombies eating guts and other body parts. Sad to say, I didn’t win any prizes, but the fair employees thought it was gruesomely funny. I didn’t want to repeat myself or be dull, so this year I decided to base my entry on news ripped straight from the headlines, as they say. Great white sharks seem to have been really busy this summer, chasing people off the beaches and biting some in the process. I imagined what it would look like if great whites had their own weenie roast on shore – but with people instead of weenies. By coincidence, it also happens to be “Shark Week” on TV. That made me laugh to myself, so I kept on going. Naturally, I’d have to use a “fire pit,” so I spray painted a Mason jar lid to create one. Thanks, AQMD, for the beach fire pit theme. It wasn’t as easy as you. Source: www.ocregister.com

Music continues to play in memory of a friend - InsideHalton.com

WELLAND — Owen Harold may be gone, but he is still remembered, still celebrated. Every year the friends of the Welland youth gather to celebrate his memory, and they invite the rest of Niagara to do the same. Owen — an avid music lover, environmentalist and friend — died in a car accident in the fall of 2008. The tragedy brought his friends home to Welland and as they mourned they began to realize Owen would have wanted them to celebrate his life. They organized a concert in his name, Owenpalooza, and to this day it continues, annually drawing hundreds to Club Richelieu on River Road for an evening of music in memory of a friend. “He was just such a good guy,” said Dave Perrotta, one of Owen’s friends who organizes the event. “Owen always loved a good box social,” he laughed. This year the event will return for its seventh run on July 25, and will again aim to deliver top-notch musical entertainment in an environmentally responsible way, just the way Owen would have wanted it. “Every aspect of the event relates back to... All the plates and cutlery will be biodegradable and everything that can be recycled will be. She noted the event usually only generates just one bag of garbage. The shirts and hoodies will be sourced from Me to We Style, a Canadian company providing eco-friendly and socially-responsible garments. Event he sponsors and vendors are all small or medium sized businesses, paying respect to Owen’s opposition to large corporate entities. “It’s our way for his spirit to live on,” said Rubino, adding she is surprised how big the event has grown. The organizers always invite people to post pictures of their Owenpalooza shirts and hats as they travel around the world. “A friend of ours was in Panama and saw a guy walking down the street in an Owenpalooza t-shirt,” she said, explaining it had apparently been purchased at a Venezuelan thrift shop. This year Hollerado is set to return as a headliner alongside Stella Ella Ola, Dire Club, Bratwurst Days, The Bends, Drftr, Fortune Runners and Katey Gatta. Local artists will also be on hand doing live art demonstrations and displaying their works. The event has also benefitted several local charities and causes in Owen’s name. Over $12,500 has been raised for a bursary in his name, service dogs for Welland families, rehab efforts for a local burn victim,. Source: www.insidehalton.com

Gone fishin': A fisherman weighs the reel options - Martha's Vineyard Times

My wife thinks the primary purpose of my post office box is to collect fishing and hunting catalogs. I do receive quite a few. If I had any engineering skills, I could figure out how to build a house from catalogs, and be featured on a morning news show reserved for useless chatter and inane reports. I enjoy thumbing through catalogs. I have amassed quite a collection for our bathroom library. I like to read about new products, and find it reassuring that some gear continues to stand the test of time. I also find it astonishing that there are spinning reels for surf fishing that now sell for about the cost of a stainless steel German dishwasher. These reels are marvels of engineering, built to the tolerances of a Swiss watch, and boast the type of finish you would find on Donald Trump’s cutlery. And they cost about the same as a good compound bow or usable shotgun. For example, the Shimano Stella saltwater reel, in the smallest size, weighs about a pound, has a mono line capacity of 195 yards of 12-pound test, and will set you back $1,000. Gasp. Add several hundred dollars and you can purchase a reel that weighs just under 2 pounds, with a line capacity of 700 yards of 80-pound braid — that means you could fight a fish off East Chop while sitting on the Lookout’s porch in Oak Bluffs, more... For many years, Van Staal was the name most associated with high-end reels. Now they seem like a bargain. The Van Staal 150 weighs 12 ounces, and has a mono capacity of 390 yards of 10-pound test. It sells for about $700. Or about the cost of two decent golf clubs. There are some solid arguments to be made for purchasing a high-end reel designed to last a lifetime and stand up to abuse — particularly for hardcore fishermen who can expect to subject their equipment to regular exposure to sand and saltwater. Doug Asselin, who can be found prowling the rocks and beaches in search of bass when he is not behind the counter at Dick’s, said it comes down to a simple equation: You get what you pay for. “The biggest difference is the components, the actual materials the reel is made with,” he said. Even at the high end, there are differences. Doug said the Stella is not made for the sand and surf. It is for tuna and boat fishermen. “Who buys Van Staals. “They are going to be guys who are fishing the surf, and fishing the surf hard,” he said. For example,. Source: www.mvtimes.com
