But with Latin American immigrants rolling sushi and native Koreans grilling chicken teriyaki, nobody’s food heritage is really off-limits. While navigating the modern culinary terrain, you can’t discredit Nakamura, a classically trained French chef of Japanese origin making a classic Italian comfort food at her new shop, Gnocchi Bar on 12th Avenue and Pine Street — in particular,... “Do you know how many times I’ve been asked, ‘Is this a sushi restaurant. ’” Nakamura said. “I had a couple of Asian [chefs] working for me, and people asked if they were my kids…. I don’t think about it. I just laugh. Embracing her talent. To be fair, Nakamura embraces the tension. Since the beginning of her cooking career, Nakamura has always sought the most complicated, challenging and fraught circumstances to grow her skill and test her ability. Immediately after graduating culinary school in Maryland, she set her sights on cooking for the most intimidating chefs in Washington, D. C. She ended up in the kitchen of Gerard Pangaud, a classic hyperbolic French chef. “I made it through a month before he ripped me,” Nakamura recounted. But she continued, “Working with him really taught me how to cook. Nakamura made an impression on Pangaud, who recommended her to his friend Thomas Keller, the father of modern American cuisine and the chef-owner of the most prestigious restaurant in America, the French Laundry. From Panguad’s kitchen, Nakamura moved to California to pursue a position at the acclaimed eatery. But after three years at the French Laundry, Nakamura traveled abroad — first working as a sous chef in Germany and then in South Korea. But while cooking in Asia, she said her male colleagues disparaged her talent simply because of her gender. “I look like I should understand a woman’s place in the kitchen over there,” Nakamura said. “People had a hard time wrapping their head around it. Well I’m stuck with Toreador from Bizet’s opera Carmen and I’m actually finding myself making up my own words to it. ‘Stupid iMac, why... That’s what I need. That’s what I need. ’ It’s the result of just seeing Carmen at Glyndebourne , a magical afternoon and evening in the heart of the most beautiful English countryside, one spent in blazing sun and adorned with a superb picnic from Leith’s. I had never thought of going to Glyndebourne before, I had vague ideas of it being somewhat elitist, expensive and as far as opera went somewhat incomprehensible too. I have now changed that opinion radically. The audience was wonderfully mixed, the price not too bad considering the wonderful time we had, and opera, at least in the case of the accessible ones like Carmen, a magical thing to behold. Glyndebourne is unique. a self-sustaining and self-financed, by ticket sales and private sponsorship, modern opera house attached to a stately home, the creation of John Christie back in the day as almost a hobby. It has grown since then to have a state of the art opera house, built a short while back, and has gained an international reputation for excellence while still retaining its uniqueness and is run by Christie’s descendants. Situated a couple of miles outside Lewes in East Sussex, Ringmer is the nearest village, the opera house is powered by its own wind turbine and made almost entirely of natural, recyclable materials. It’s big enough to house a reasonably sized audience yet small enough to be intimate for performers and audience alike. Outside the gardens and countryside of the South Downs sprawl languorously away from view, begging to be enjoyed with a glass of chilled wine and fine food, and that is exactly what the majority of Glyndebourne goers do. The owner of Istanbul Auction, Uğur Yeğin, said 122 items, including Enver Paşa’s photos, uniform, hat, staff officer diploma, cutlery, medals, photos from the Libya and Tripoli fronts, military maps and paintings, as well as pencil paintings... The auction was set to be organized in April but postponed on the request of the National Defense Ministry. Yeğin said 64 out of 122 belongings were bought by the Yıldız Palace Museum and the Military Museum affiliated with the Turkish General Staff, while the rest were bought by private collectors. He said the Military Museum bought the tools used in the wars and paintings, and the Yıldız Palace bought the belongings of Naciye Sultan. “A gold and silver inlaid sword, gifted by Sultan Reşad Paşa, and a Purdey gun went to the Yıldız Palace, too,” he said. Yeğin said they were pleased the items were bought by museums, adding, “People will be able to see the private belongings of Enver Paşa in the museums from now on. ”. Enver Paşa was considered the most powerful figure in the Ottoman Empire government. He made the decision to enter the Empire into World War I, on the side of Germany.
