Knife maker Lamson & Goodnow carves out future in Westfield - MassLive.com

WESTFIELD - Lamson & Goodnow Manufacturing Co. , the nation's oldest cutlery maker having been founded in 1837, is finding a second life in its new home. Lamson now has 35 employees at its new Westfield factory at 79 Mainline Drive, about two-thirds of them hired since the company moved its operations this past spring from its historic home in the Buckland side of Shelburne Falls to Westfield. On a recent morning employees grinding, polishing and finishing knives, spatulas and other tools for the kitchen and workplace shared space with electricians and riggers who were installing more of Lamson's equipment. "All this used to be on two floors," said James C. Pelletier, president and CEO of Lamson comparing the old factory layout with the new. "Now we have all our machinery packed in tightly to reduce our material handling. The factory is still a month or so behind on its orders, Pelletier said. But production is picking up and customers - like Williams-Sonoma or Victorinox Swiss Army - are ordering more goods for the busy Christmas season. "Ours is a funny business," Pelletier said. "A customer orders only when they need the product. But having the product usually stimulates more need. The more you ship, the more orders you get. Lamson's knives sell for a range of prices, from a low of $10 all the way up to $300. With its recent financial troubles, Lamson had been shipping all its back inventory to raise cash without manufacturing more goods. Lamson has more than 2,000 customers. Most of them are independent kitchen supply stores scattered around the country. "Our customers are very glad we are here," he said. Pelletier hopes to close a deal soon for more capital from a local investor or investors. By late September, Lamson should even have a factory outlet store open at 79 Mainline Drive to go with a store that will remain in Shelburne Falls. Lamson has had a tough go of it in recent years. A year ago, in August 2014, Lamson filed for protection from its creditors under Chapter 11 of federal bankruptcy law. Owner James Ross Anderson had taken back a day-to-day role with the company after having retired. He brought in Pelletier, a former Smith & Wesson executive, and new managers. They moved to get closer to suppliers and service providers and to get a factory that was all on one floor. The Shelburne location also suffered flooding. Source: www.masslive.com

Schrade SCHF45 Leroy Full Tang Bowie - Cutting Edge Knife Blog (blog)

When you're in need of a heavy-duty chopper that'll get the job done, reach for the Schrade SCHF45 Leroy Bowie Style Fixed Blade. This massive chopper boasts a powerful 10. 35-inch blade made of titanium-coated 8Cr13MoV stainless steel. A clip point and hollow grind accentuate the thick blade, while a pronounced finger guard choil offers a more balanced grip when you're chopping through pieces of wood. Because wielding a nearly 16. 5-inch knife can be strenuous on the hands, the SCHF45 has ergonomic TPE handle slabs over the full tang construction. Finger grooves, a textured pattern, and aggressive jimping provide a secure and precise grip, even in the toughest weather conditions. 6-oz knife comes with a nylon fiber belt sheath with grommets for different lashings. Now pick up this Bowie chopper and get to work. The Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 in Walden, New York. The quality of the cutlery produced was unique to the industry at that time. Imperial Knife Company, established in Providence, Rhode Island in 1916, grew to manufacture a full range of value-priced folding pocket knives. In 2003, the strength of Schrade's design concepts and engineering continues to move forward with exciting, cutting edge product introductions and a respect for tradition. Representing the newest of the new is Q3 Technology for Quick, Quiet and Quality offering a series of multi-functional folders designed for maximum performance. And in recognition of its heritage, Schrade's Custom Collaboration series celebrates the uniqueness of handcrafted design in their partnerships with the nations finest custom knife makers. Blending technology and tradition, the company continues its leadership position in the global cutlery and tool marketplace. Key to Schrade's strength as a knife maker is the workforce of talented and committed craftsmen, including third and fourth generation employees. Learning the trade from parents and grandparents, they pass along the valuable knowledge, skills and pride necessary for the consistent production of quality knives and tools. That dedication and spirit lives at the 93 acre site in Ellenville, blending the decades of experienced hand craftsmanship with some of the most modern technology available. Schrade continues to grow in leaps and bounds due to our well earned reputation for quality and value, responsiveness to an ever changing market place, innovative new products, diversification.
