Surviving Long Airport Layovers - The New Indian Express - The New Indian Express

One of the most arduous things during travelling is probably long airport layovers. This may happen because your connecting flight is after a few hours or because of a delay. Whatever the reason be, after a long layover you end up exhausted and grumpy. The best way to survive a long layover is to be prepared. Have movies and TV shows on your laptop or tablet. This is a good time to catch up on entertainment that you have been trying to view but couldn’t find the time for. This forced free time can also be used to read or complete work that has been sitting on your to-do list for a while. If you want to rest your eyes and catch up on your sleep, a lot of airports have free quiet zones with lounge chairs. You could also go away from shopping zones and towards the gates, where quite a few of the airports have lounge chairs, which are very comfortable to stretch out on. Lounges have high-speed internet, showers, unlimited food and beverages and also... This can be a good time to get the kinks out of your back if you have spent the past few hours cramped in an aircraft seat. Another thing that can be welcoming after spending hours sitting in the flight is working out. If your airport has a gym, you can make use of that, and if not you can use the ample space that is there in airport terminals by brisk walking and window shopping. The best part about it is that you won’t spend any money, unless you get tempted and actually do some shopping. On the other hand, this can also be a good time to do some souvenir shopping, as most airports have stores selling memorabilia from the city/country you are in. Duty-Free is a good place to get expensive perfumes and cosmetics at a cheaper cost. If airline food does not appeal to your palate, you can use a layover to grab some proper food. Most airports have food courts, if not some restaurants as well. They might be expensive, but at least you can get a proper hot meal instead of struggling to cut a dry piece of chicken with little plastic cutlery. You can also sit down for a hot cup of tea or coffee, just to pass your time and get your caffeine levels up before the next leg of the journey begins. If your layover is exceptionally long, chances are you will know about it beforehand and a wise choice would be to see if. Source: www.newindianexpress.com

Indian Television Dot Com | Zee TV slots pre-Independence period drama at 9.30 pm - Indiantelevision.com

NEW DELHI: Zee TV is all set to replace its existing 9. 30 pm prime time show Qubool Hai with its new magnum opus Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani , which will showcase the lifestyle of royalty in pre-independent India against backdrop of history. Debuting on 27 July, the show will air from Monday to Friday at 9. 30 pm. With this, Qubool Hai will move to 7:30 pm slot, further fortifying the early primetime band. Zee TV generally spends four to five per cent of the budget of any series on marketing and advertising the show and will do the same this time round too. Speaking to indiantelevision. com Zee TV business head Pradeep Hejmadi said that while the amount of money being spent on Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani will be more or less the same as in previous programmes, it may be lower percentage-wise as the budget of the show is much higher. The show is being presented by Kelloggs and is being promoted across all television channels including the Zee network, and in other forms including newspaper advertisements and hoardings. What's more, with an aim to pull in a new set of audience comprising mainly the youth, which is interested in history, Zee is also looking at marketing the show aggressively on the digital medium. Talking about the show, Hejmadi said, “Even when it comes to genres such as history and mythology, a most fascinating period that remains unexplored by Indian television is the pre-Independence era. This vibrant period of India’s history that saw a great upheaval also saw intense drama unfold in the lives of the royalty of the princely states. Behind empty walls of grandeur and fake displays of splendour was hidden the truth of erosion of wealth, insecurities, succumbing to British dominion, depression and bankruptcy. Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani is a story of love set against this most interesting canvas. It aims to give viewers an up close and personal view of the lifestyles and some of the most closely guarded secrets of the rich and royal of the 1940s. It is a work of fiction that draws inspiration from the lives of the royalty of that period. Referring to why the series had history as a backdrop and not as the main peg, Hejmadi said, "Today’s generation is aware of history in terms of the Quit India movement etc. but not so aware of the way the royalty of the time lived and their mysteries. There has been an increased interest from the. Source: www.indiantelevision.com

Shirley Jackson's unpublished works, and why finishing a story might be an ... - The Independent

Harper Lee’s old/new novel focuses the mind on posthumous publications. The draft of Go Set a Watchman remained in a safety deposit box from 1957 until its “discovery” in 2011, and might just as easily have been published posthumously, or never seen the light of day. Speculation around a third part of the Mockingbird trilogy was sounded again this week on whether The Long Goodbye might exist, and be published after Lee passes away. The shorter works of another outstanding American author are posthumously published this month. the stories, essays and humorous writings of Shirley Jackson. Let Me Tell You (Penguin Classics, £20) is a good starting point for those who are not familiar with Jackson, though her first published short story, “The Lottery”, is not in it. It should be, for the fantastic furore it raised among New Yorker... ) that the magazine, and the author, received record amounts of hate mail. Many of her early pieces, unpublished or unfinished, feature here. some are polished while others are imperfect, and fascinating in the same way as Go Set a Watchman in revealing the author’s process and showing us the growing shape of a story. Sometimes she ventures into the surreal and macabre, sometimes she gives us domestic satire, and sometimes there are all these things in one story or essay. The work has breadth enough to have been praised by Stephen King on the one hand and Donna Tartt on the other. Jackson was writing the lives of privileged middle-class Americans, mainly women, but also teenage girls and neurotic men, all with humanity alongside a brilliant wit. Her unpublished short fiction that comprises the first section of this book describes an era on the cusp of change, and her characters capture the restlessness in the air as the stuffy conformity of the 1950s morphs into the rebelliousness of the... She is silent, seemingly respectful, but her rebellious thoughts are divulged quietly, contemptuously, to the reader, and we feel her generation’s insolence building within her. In another few years, she will, in all probability, be slamming a door in their faces to live, long-haired and bra-less, in a hippie commune. There is a particularly intriguing unfinished.
