Great Lakes Lighter Club slates Zippo/Case swap in Bradford - Bradford Era

Collectors will be set up in the downstairs meeting space of the lodge from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. Friday and the following day from 9 a. m. to 1 p. m. , when the auction will be held, according to club president Bill Kolk. Kolk said this year the auction will be open to anyone — not just club members — and he hopes to see many local people there. There will also be hamburgers and other food being cooked, he noted. “We’ll have a lot of special lighters for the auction this year. Anybody in Bradford is welcome, everything is open to the public,” he said. “They’re more than welcome to bring Zippo lighters and Case knives if they want to get a value on it or sell it. There are always people on hand to do appraisals. He said 26 tables are spoken for at this point, and if the event gets any bigger in future years it will need to be moved to a different location — likely St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. A few collectors will have W. R. Case & Sons Cutlery knives on display as well, according to Kolk. “Why not kind of bring them both together. That’s kind of something new that we’re working on that this year,” he said. The Zen Lighter Club will also be have a couple tables set up with Zen lighters. Kolk said the group commissioned a special lighter from Zippo for the swap meet that depicts the monument in front of Zippo/Case Museum of Zippo’s founding family with the words, “Great Lakes Lighter Club Swap Meet 2015. ”. “Those will be... Although his collection continues to grow, the 2015 swap meet lighter is Kolk’s current favorite of his collection. “I guess I really am partial to the swap meet lighter because it has a lot of history from Zippo with the picture of the owners,” he said. “I do have all the club’s lighters that we’ve done since we started 11 years ago, and there are around 30 of them,” Kolk related. “We’ve done seven different lighthouse ones, plus the swap meet and Christmas ones. The Great Lakes Lighter Club, celebrating its 11th anniversary, has been meeting in Bradford since 2008, when the Zippo/Case Swap Meet ceased. “We’ve been going for 11 years now, and it just keeps getting bigger all the time,” Kolk said. “The membership is growing and we have more vendors than what he had last year, plus the people that said their. Parents Dig Deep to Give Children Dream Parties - AllAfrica.com

Children's birthday parties aren't just about the kids anymore. Today, it is a competition to see who can host the biggest and most expensive party for their child as parents try to outdo each other. Whether one decides to have a house party or hire a venue, the trend is to host the biggest party that will leave tongues wagging for months to come. This competitiveness is said to be a result of the pressure from peers who have hosted lavish parties for their children, or even children who have attended such parties and want their parents to host a similar or bigger event. Some parents looking for creativity and flair are opting to hire event planners three months in advance to make the day a success. Ms Wanyora Kimani, whose daughter turned one in April, sought the services of Ruth, a party planner, to arrange and coordinate the activities of the day. Ms Kimani spent about Sh140,000 for the birthday party that hosted 30 children and 35 adults. The cost included hiring a themed deco, play equipment such as bouncing castles and water slides, among others, as well as paying the planner. "It was my daughters 1st birthday and I wanted it to be as special and elaborate as possible without having to worry about all the intricate details," she says. This new trend has seen a host of children's parties event planners crop up in recent years due to the high demand for their services. Many planners also supply the treats at these events. A planner helps in various ways: from customising the invitation cards to matching party themes. coming up with a checklist of entertainment. scheduling activities. booking the event items. setting up the party to coordinating the activities of the day to ensure the children have a great time. At the end of the day, the invited children will bring presents but they will not go back home empty handed as the trend today is for the host to give away party favours in the form of gifts. Ruth Nyabwa of Classique Touch Kids Parties says parents feel the need to host lavish parties due to the fact that their peers are hosting such parties for their children. The pressure comes from wanting to keep up but also from their children who are aware of exactly how they want their parties. Most parents who are invited to these lavish parties often ask for referrals and want to host bigger parties than the ones hosted by their friends. "I have seen. Source: allafrica.com

If we downsize and de-clutter our lives can we get more out of life? - NEWS.com.au

An unusual size pan, a fancy plate for a special occasion, a zester you used for one recipe. Do the same with your wardrobe. Note the slightly-too-small shoes you’ve never worn. What about your bathroom. Admit it: you’ve barely used that perfume you bought on a whim. If your house is overflowing, you’re not alone. Australians spend $10 billion a year on items we never use. Clutter is overtaking our lives and, according to new research, it’s also taking its toll on our happiness. According to recent UK research, couples have 32 arguments a year about the volume of objects in their house. Stuff can mean serious stress. But things are changing. You only have to look at your Instagram feed to see the photos that people deem share-worthy are often less about possessions and more about experiences they’re enjoying: holiday shots, time with loved ones, delicious food. Stuff is out. Experience is in. James Wallman, cultural-trend forecaster and author of Stuffocation: Living More with Less , believes focusing on “experientialism” (instead of accumulating items) brings fulfilment. “Having too much, doing too little, and living a life focused on the accumulation of material things is making people anxious,” he writes. “Instead of feeling enriched by the things we own, we are stifled by them. Experiences are more likely to lead to happiness. This should serve as a new value system for a better, happier culture. You’ve probably already welcomed experientialism into your life. How many times have you suggested to friends you have dinner together rather than exchange Christmas presents. Or told your partner you’d rather have a weekend away than a birthday gift. The success of companies such as Red Balloon, which offers “experience gifts” from rally driving to spa days, proves experientialism is big business. Some people are taking it a step further. Instead of buying less, they’re getting rid of things. They believe living with fewer items lets us prioritise what’s really important. Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus are two friends now known as The Minimalists. Five years ago, they were earning six-figure salaries and working 70-hour weeks in the US. But ‘affluenza’ was making them stressed. the cars and gadgets they could afford weren’t enriching their lives. So they packed every item in their (large) houses into boxes with the aim to unpack only what they needed, when they needed it. On the. Source: www.news.com.au
