Redesigned Christofle: Classic glamour with a modern twist - Los Angeles Times

Known for its distinctive silverwork and tabletop pieces, the Parisian firm Christofle has established Studio Christofle on Melrose Place in Los Angeles as the international brand’s sole concept store. The interiors of the boutique, which opened in 2013 and are completely re-imagined on an annual basis, have become something of an event for home décor enthusiasts. “It is a one-of-a-kind design laboratory, which will be constantly evolving,” says artistic director Stephane Parmentier, who oversaw the latest transformation of the boutique into a setting inspired by Parisian apartments and the architecture of... To soften the contemporary design of the gallery-like space, Parmentier installed custom velvet panels imprinted with a trompe l’oeil pattern inspired by paneling and molding found in Haussmann-designed apartments. He also paid homage to the store’s location in one of Los Angeles’ best-known design districts by decorating with locally sourced antiques and midcentury pieces, including a $15,000 pair of armchairs that Hollywood decorator William Haines... “Our goal was a carefully constructed dialogue between classic beauty and modern sensibility,” Parmentier says. “Christofle is a mix of styles, generations and feelings, and the boutique captures that with the mix of old and new. Flexibility, options makes fine dining with toddlers possible - HeraldNet

WASHINGTON Stepping into the Oval Room, just down the street from the White House, you immediately know it is a serious restaurant. The staff is polished, the atmosphere hushed, the tablecloths crisp and white. The clientele of this power-dining mainstay includes high-profile politicos and business leaders. Executive chef John Melfis menu is refined and sophisticated: Cara cara oranges pep tuna sashimi, foie gras is speckled with cacao nib granola, and smoked avocado puree and strawberry jam accompany the venison. Basically, its the kind of place you would never take a small child. And yet here we were, armed with diaper bags, distractions galore and our 2-year-old sons. What were we thinking. We know there are rules (written and not) about children in certain dining rooms. Diners have strong feelings about young eaters, and the thought of being judged publicly and privately was daunting. In 2014, after a couple brought a crying 8-month-old to Chicagos prestigious Alinea, chef Grant Achatz sparked an Internet hatestorm when he considered banning children from the restaurant. But as food writers with young children (coincidentally, boys the same age), we knew as soon as they were born that we would want to expose them to a different level of dining early in their lives. Frankly, we believe children should be able to dine almost anywhere well, perhaps anywhere except once-in-a-lifetime places such as Minibar or the Inn at Little Washington as long as they behave appropriately, dont diminish anyone elses dining... We started taking the boys to restaurants when they were as young as 6 weeks. Back then, it was easy. They would arrive in a car seat or stroller and sleep through most of the meal. When they grew into toddlers, though more mobile and more vocal restaurants with fine china, hipster crowds and extensive wine lists faded from both our families dining agendas. Did they have to. We didnt want to wait for puberty before returning to some of our favorite places to eat. So we decided there was no way to know until we tried and booked test meals at three restaurants with different personalities. We set up ground rules to be fair to the boys, the restaurants, our fellow diners and ourselves: Early time slots on weeknights. No set menus. And reservations only (no Little Serow yet). --- Thats how we found ourselves at the Oval Room at 6 p. m. one Wednesday in late. Source: www.heraldnet.com

iFork is a great idea with a really dumb name - The Gadgeteer

Wasn’t there a law passed several years ago banning the practice of adding an “i” in front of a product name just to sound techy and hip. Probably not, but there should be, call your congressman now. Anyway, the iFork (just saying the name makes me roll my eyes because it has nothing to do with the internet or tech) is actually a really good idea for the eating implements that we’ve been using for centuries. The iFork, iSpoon and iKnife (I’m rolling my eyes again) all have a small post or ball attached to the bottom edge that allow each piece of cutlery to stay elevated above the surface that it’s resting on. Why is this a good idea. Think about it for a sec, restaurant tables, kitchen countertops, picnic tables, may or may not be clean. Instead of resting your fork on a dirty germy table and then sticking it directly in your mouth when you eat, you can keep it away from the germs. The iLine (there they go again) of flatware are available in stainless steel versions with a ball or a stackable post design. They also offer plastic disposable versions of their flatware. Prices range from $19. 99 for one set of the stainless version up to $99. 00 for a set of 30. The plastic versions can be purchased for 4 cents each. For more info visit iFork. Someone posted a review Online stating that she found the handles on the Yamazaki Float 5-piece Place Setting Flatware to be too heavy. She rated them just one star. I agree that flatware where the “usable end” doesn’t touch the table is a wonderful idea. I had no idea these existed…and I for one think someone should have thought of this idea decades ago. I wonder what she was expecting – they aren’t any heavier than many other sets of flatware I’ve handled. They are solid metal, so they aren’t the lightest set I’ve handled, but they aren’t any heavier than any other large-handled set I’ve dealt with. (I’d say my parent’s set is actually heavier. ) The iFork is probably lighter, as they have a smaller handle, true. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by how they felt in my hand when I first got them – that was six years or so ago, and they’ve been my daily dinnerware since. I’d recommend them, if they are to your taste. (Style and taste being the main differentiators between most sets of flatware, in my opinion. OK, so because iFork Website said “allow 6 to 8 weeks for delivery,” I decided to also try the Yamazaki Float silverware (via Amazon Prime delivery). Source: the-gadgeteer.com
