The latest trends in kitchen cabinets - Waterloo Record

If you’re in the market for custom kitchen cabinetry, there are several things to keep in mind. You’ll want to:. - Consider what kind of wood you would like to use. - Decide on the door and panel style you prefer. - Choose the stain or paint colour that best suits your vision. - Select hardware that will complement your new cabinets. At a completely custom cabinet shop, the only limit is your imagination. You can use every inch of space available, often in thoughtful and creative ways. Trend-wise, the all white kitchen continues its long reign in the design world, but it isn’t your only option. To make a dramatic statement, think modern bistro and select inky-black cabinetry, contrasting the look with a lighter countertop. Of course every variation in between is also possible. Using painted or stained cabinetry means the choices are endless. Whether it’s a rustic, country, farmhouse feel or a sleek, modern Scandinavian aesthetic, you can create it. Details like crown moulding, corbeils, and other millwork make the room look pulled together and finished. Another big trend in kitchen cabinets is actually hidden inside: organized interiors. There are so many ways to keep your kitchen staples orderly, including: garbage cans, pullout shelves, wine racks, spice racks, drawer dividers, and cutlery drawers. Whatever your style, insist on quality workmanship. 3D plans allow you to see in advance how your design will look. At Millbank Family Furniture, skilled Mennonite craftsmen make all of their pieces by hand using solid Canadian wood, with expertise that has been handed down from generation to generation. Whether retrofitting your kitchen cabinets or building new ones from scratch, you’ll not only get an updated look, it will be one that lasts. 5 pointers for keeping your knives sharp - ConsumerReports.org

Dull knives can slow you down because they require more force to cut stuff. They’re also dangerous because they’re more likely to slip when slicing, putting your fingers at risk. Factory sharpening doesn’t last long, so it’s up to you to keep the edge sharp. Here’s how from the experts at Consumer Reports. That smooth-looking edge on a chef’s knife, paring knife, and slicer actually has superfine teeth like a comb. When you chop straight down, they get messed up. Honing on a steel sharpening rod straightens them out again, restoring the edge. Don’t scrape. Avoid scraping the edge of the knife across your cutting board to scoop up chopped food. that dulls the knife. Use a pastry scraper for the job instead. Do use the right cutting board. Wooden cutting boards are the most forgiving. polyethylene is a close second. Cutting on a plate or other hard surface such as tile or glass will ruin the edge. Don’t put knives in the dishwasher. Even if the manufacturer says it’s okay, always hand-wash knives. Excessive heat and chemicals take their toll. Wash with soap and water, and dry immediately. Do store them right. Use a block or a wall-mounted magnetic strip. Avoid drawers, where edges can knock against each other or other kitchen implements. Top knife sets from our tests Zwilling J. A. Everything in the kitchen finds a place with help from Dillard Kitchen & Bath - LubbockOnline.com

Regardless of your kitchen’s size, organization is a must for people who love to cook. Wasting time looking for the right pan or that special spice can quickly take the joy out of cooking. “At Dillard Kitchen and Bath, we spend time with our clients figuring out how they use their kitchens and how they wish to have their things stored – where there’s a place for everything, and everything in its place. ” says Dale Dillard, Owner of Dillard Kitchen and Bath. An organized kitchen improves function, productivity, safety and enjoyment. Ideally the best way to plan a kitchen is to arrange it in an organized manner. Every kitchen, small or large, should consist of the three basic centers – food storage, cooking and clean-up. When planning these areas, the sink/clean-up center is usually centered between the cook center and food storage. Each center will contain utensils uniquely designed for the task performed there. “Storing items at point of use is one of the first things we consider when planning storage in the kitchen,” explains Dale. “If I were standing in front of the stove, for example, spices, pans, lids and pot holders are just a few things I would need to complete the task at hand. In designing a kitchen, we make sure these things are with in arm’s reach. The ideal location for everyday items is 15 inches from the floor and no higher than 48 inches – this is usually between the average person’s knees and shoulders. Storing items within this range eliminates unnecessary bending and reaching. The kitchen can be the location of many accidents, and disorganized shelves and drawers can be the cause of needless mishaps. There are easy fixes, however. A cutlery divider can keep all the flatware contained, and a knife drawer with a slotted knife block can keep all the blades under wraps. Sometimes these can be in the same drawer space. Wall cabinets in disarray may cause glass items to fall and break. pull-down shelves can help you reach items that are out of view and eliminate this hazard. “At Dillard Kitchen and Bath, we strive to use every available inch of space in the kitchen,” says Dale. “Storing items in previously unused areas is much easier with pull-out shelving for those blind corner cabinets that just collected dust, or worse hide the dish or pan you are looking for. Also consider pull-out trash bins, with recycling containers in the same place, to make it easier for the smallest members of. Source: lubbockonline.com
