Mei King endures as Margaret Avenue bridge reopening nears - Waterloo Record

KITCHENER — For the first time since fall 2013, a bridge spans the twin railway tracks at Margaret Avenue. Construction crews fitted 14 new concrete beams into place Saturday night and early Sunday morning — a key part of the project. The work was done in the early hours to avoid disrupting trains. But that doesn't mean traffic will be crossing the tracks at Margaret any time soon, said Chris Spere, the city's manager of engineering construction: the bridge is still scheduled to open to traffic in late September or early October. The opening can't come soon enough for the owners and employees of the Mei King Restaurant, perched right at the east end of the bridge. The restaurant has seen business dry up in the two years since the bridge was closed in June 2013. That's when an inspection revealed the bridge had the same construction flaw blamed for a fatal 2006 bridge collapse in Quebec. The old bridge was demolished that fall. "It's been tough," said employee Yuan Li on Monday. He gestured around the empty restaurant. "You can see: there's no customers. It's been very hard. Some days, the restaurant might see one or two customers coming in for lunch. Some days, no one comes in at midday, though evenings are usually a bit busier. "Even at dinnertime, it's very quiet," Li said. Some customers saw the many "Road closed" signs and assumed the restaurant was also shuttered, Li said. Others saw the chain-link fencing lining both sides of the sidewalk and made a similar assumption. Some loyal regulars came, only to be disturbed as they ate by the unrelenting pounding of pile drivers banging in supports for the bridge. He held in his hand a piece of cutlery (usually a fork, I think), which he waved high in the air as the cars and buses roared by, sometimes with enormous energy and sometimes quite calmly. He didn’t seem unhappy but he was certainly a solitary figure, unaware of the people who passed him by. He was in his own world. I assumed - rightly - that he had dementia. Then he disappeared. The obituaries that followed revealed that he had been a psychoanalyst and brilliant musicologist, whose research had added significantly to our knowledge of how Beethoven and Mozart composed their music. Only then did it occur to me that perhaps with his fork, his spoon, he had been conducting the traffic to the music in his head. This image has always haunted me because of the great disconnect between what we all saw - a demented old man weaving around on the pavement - and what he was experiencing, which I like to imagine was both the music of the composers he had so... The enormous rise in quirky hamburger and fast food joints that has taken the UK restaurant market by storm over the last couple of years means that any new kids on the block have a lot to contend with. Some choose to stand out with a gimmick, often retro-themed overload, while others aim to find original ways to broaden the limits of burger-based creativity. But the trend at the moment is all about basic food quality and the restaurants that are getting it right know that customers care more about exactly what’s on the plate, rather than whether or not it’s delivered on rollerskates. Perhaps that is to be expected as the restaurant is little brother to the reputable Frank’s Steakhouse just over the road. Tom Hewer, owner of the small chain, is currently adding more siblings to the growing family as he opens two more Frank’s - one in St James and one in Watling Street in Towcester - and transforms The Artizan pub in Abington into a cosy pizzeria. With plenty of experience serving local meat-eaters over the last few years, it’s no surprise that the food itself was well up to scratch. When I visited for a casual weekday dinner with my landlord and his brother - who were apparently most alike in their palettes - they both ordered the ‘Pig Out’ burger, consisting of the standard hearty beef pattie, topped with a generous scoop of... I went for the ‘Saints’ burger, which replaced the beef for a juicy grilled chicken breast topped with chorizo slices and melted cheddar. I swapped the standard brioche bun for a gluten-free roll, which I felt was the most impressive part about the meal. It’s usually quite tricky to find gluten-free baked goods that actually taste of anything, but the bread served up at Frank’s is easily one of the best I have ever had. Another key point-scorer was the ‘bottomless fries’ policy, which we took full advantage of. We finished off the meal with a sundae each: two chocolate brownies and one bannoffee. They were nothing more or less than you would expect, but they were very tasty and the ice-cream came from the ever-popular Northampton-based brand Gallone’s. So the food was good and the price was reasonable, but there were a couple of little elements that let the experience down slightly.
