Four Years On, The New Qantas is on the Rise - Airways News (blog)

By John Walton / Published July 14, 2015 When Qantas CEO Alan Joyce pressed the nuclear button in October 2011, locked out staff and shut down the entire airline as part of an ongoing confrontation with trade unions, few could have predicted the... The Qantas of 2015 looks quite different to the Qantas of 2011 and earlier. The biggest change is Qantas’ deep strategic partnership with Emirates, and the shakeup of the Red Roo’s European operation to serve only London from Sydney and Melbourne via Dubai rather than operate a wider set of European destinations over... Other Asian routes too have been slashed, a significant proportion of the airline’s iconic Boeing 747-400 fleet retired, and a Sydney-Auckland-Los Angeles A330 flight cut. In economic terms, the loss-making international operations have at least had the bleeding staunched, although the shock to the system was quite severe. On leisure-heavy routes domestically, and indeed on some international leisure routes to north Asia, low-cost carrier arm Jetstar has taken over coverage from its full-service parent airline. The added LCC efficiency, which Joyce understands intimately since running Jetstar was his previous job, is a key part of Qantas’ transformation, especially as leverage with legacy staff unions. Joyce calls it a “hybrid” airline group now:. Emirates’ colossal European network, serving cities over Dubai that an airline of Qantas’ scale could never hope to match, is an enormous benefit for QF, just as Etihad connections over Abu Dhabi are vital for competitor Virgin Australia. The geographical (and Heathrow-related) inconvenience of flying Australia-Singapore-London-Europe under Qantas’ previous strategic partnership with British Airways was as inefficient as it was unpopular, and passengers are even enthusiastic to... Yet the lighter, tighter Qantas is doubling down on its design credentials. No less than Marc Newson, the designer of the Apple Watch is Qantas’ go-to designer. His iconic Sydney First lounge is holding its own among the best in the world, his weird yet wonderful cutlery is still flying, new lounges in Singapore and Hong Kong are the subject of rave reviews (“ sleek, industrial, edgy, and at the same time... Art show opening at New Waterford's Main Street Art Gallery Friday - Cape Breton Post

Artist Patsy MacKinnon, left, helps artists Marie MacDonald, centre, of New Waterford and Marie's daughter, Cassie MacDonald, Halifax, sort out pieces of their artwork in preparation for their upcoming art show, "Escapes: Land, Streets, Water,... " The exhibit is a mother/daughter exploration which will also include photography from Marie's other daughter, Krista, also of Halifax. A new art exhibit opening at the Main Street Art Gallery in the New Waterford Credit Union Friday not only includes oil paintings from artist Marie MacDonald, but also oil paintings by her daughter Cassie MacDonald, 34, and photography from... Marie said it's a wonderful feeling to be showing with her daughters. "I love it," she said. "Showing with Cassie and Krista gave me the courage to do it, as I've always been a little shy about that. The show, "Escapes: Land, Streets, Water, Imagination": A mother/daughter exploration of 'out there,'” opens Friday from 3-5 p. m. at the Main Street Art Gallery, with the exhibit remaining in the art gallery until Sept. 30, open to the public during business hours of the credit union. Marie, who has five daughters, began painting when pregnant with her daughter Cassie. She belonged to the Cape Breton Artists Association years ago and has shown her work through the association and at one time owned a gallery and frame shop in the community. Cassie MacDonald describes herself as "a late-blooming artist," not taking to the paintbrush until her 30s. Now, six years later, she has had two collections presented in Halifax and has created artwork for her own calendars. Cassie, who works as an office administrator at Saint Mary's University and is an accomplished singer/songwriter, describes her paintings as "whimsical, contemporary folk art. "She is extremely creative," Marie said. "She has a new album coming out, 'Cutlery and Cryin. Krista, also of Halifax, works as production coordinator for DHX Media. Marie said Krista’s photography display will include photos from an ice storm. "She takes what piques her artistic interest. Artist Patsy MacKinnon, of New Waterford is curator of the art gallery. She said this show includes a combination of everything. "This is a very. Source: www.capebretonpost.com
