European Union diplomats plan £2 million imperial style dinner service ... - Telegraph.co.uk

The dinner service, which stands to be larger and nearly ten times the cost of one recently purchased for the White House, marks the coming of age of the EEAS as a fully-fledged diplomatic corps . Created by the 2009 Lisbon Treaty, it is headed... The service has a staff of 3,400, a budget of 793 million euros (£550 million) and outposts covering the Seychelles, Australia, Canada and Kazakhstan. It is running more than a dozen military and civil missions worldwide, disburses hundreds of millions of pounds in EU aid, and was at the heart of nuclear diplomacy with Iran. It is now preparing a major military offensive against people traffickers in Libya - known as EUNAVFOR Med - and it is increasingly highly regarded by Washington. It is also viewed with grave suspicion among some Tories, who fear it is undermining the independence of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The EEAS has encouraged nations to shut down separate national embassies and "embed" diplomats in its outposts, and used the "savings" to justify its own budget increases. The service has grand plans for expansion. The Telegraph has seen tender documents for a credit line worth up to 200 million euros (£138 million) to purchase property worth as much as 450 million euros (£312 million) around the world. The EEAS said it would save money in the long-term by ending the need to rent buildings. The fine dining comes as other arms of the EU instruct member states, including Britain, to cut their public deficits. "If we need further confirmation of the pretentions and aspirations to grandeur of this organisation, this dinner service is it. It is absolutely appalling,” said Geoffrey Van Orden, a Conservative MEP and retired British Army Brigadier. “We must put a scythe to the costs of the EEAS before it gets out of hand. We can no longer tolerate these false ambitions, not least when we are cutting back our own embassies. “This is just a blatant provocation to the Greek people,” said Giorgious Lougiakis, a taxi driver in Athens. Vat on foods including beef, breakfast cereal and cooking oil jumps from 13 per cent to 23 per cent on Monday, under the terms of EU bailout plans. Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, yesterday warned that the surge of the. Source: www.telegraph.co.uk

GM ignition switches tied to 124 deaths - Northwest Arkansas News

DETROIT -- A compensation fund set up for victims of faulty ignition switches in General Motors vehicles says the switches were responsible for 124 deaths and 266 injuries. The fund, run by attorney Kenneth Feinberg, has finished processing the 4,342 claims it received by the Jan. 31 deadline. Of those, 91 percent were deemed ineligible or deficient. Claimants could not appeal Feinberg's decision. Victims' families are being offered compensation of at least $1 million each. GM recalled 2. 6 million Chevrolet Cobalts and other small cars last year but acknowledged it knew about the ignition switch problems for more than a decade. As of March 31, GM had paid $200 million to settle claims filed with Feinberg. The company has said it expects to pay up to $600 million. Comcast to start streaming video service. NEW YORK -- Comcast will introduce a streaming video service as it faces growing intrusions from companies such as Netflix and a rising number of customers who are becoming more mobile, using tablets and phones for entertainment. The nation's largest cable company said the new service available to its Internet customers, called Stream, will cost $15 a month. Anyone using the service will be able to watch live TV from about a dozen networks, including HBO, on phones, tablets and laptops. The service includes on-demand movies and shows. Comcast Corp. said Monday that it will introduce the service in Boston at the end of the summer, followed by Chicago and Seattle. It plans to make it available to all its Internet service customers by early 2016. The Philadelphia company is the latest to recognize the shift toward streaming. Verizon Communications and Cablevision Systems Corp. have set up options for people who have canceled cable services, many of them younger viewers, who have grown less willing to pay for a full slate of channels and who want more mobile options for entertainment. finds no single reason for swing day. WASHINGTON -- The Treasury Department and other government agencies are unable to pinpoint a single reason for a period of extreme volatility that occurred in the market for Treasury securities on Oct. 15 last year. Agencies, including Treasury and the Federal Reserve, issued a joint report saying that a variety of factors, such as record trading volumes, may have contributed to the volatility. I Want Plates - The London Economic

By Jonathan Hatchman, Food Editor, @TLE_Food. For as long as there’s been fine dining restaurants, creativity in the kitchen has always been encouraged. Sure, sometimes the classics are very difficult to improve upon, yet without such focus it’s unlikely that chefs such as Heston Blumenthal, whose cooking is often reminiscent of a stereotypical mad scientist, or Pierre Gargnall – the artist behind... However, as far as extreme creativity is concerned, it’s necessary for a strict line to be drawn between what is, and what is not acceptable. Earlier in the year, a Twitter campaign – We Want Plates – set up by West Yorkshire-based digital content manager Ross McGinnes, rose to prominence having gained over 62,000 Twitter followers to date. ‘We Want Plates’ has become a platform to share outrageous serving solutions that have been adopted by restaurants across the globe. Ranging from the classic Slate or Chopping Board to the plain bizarre (Tennis Rackets, Old Shoes, Flat Caps, Dustbin Lids, etc. ) Not only are the majority of these plate substitutes unbelievably pretentious, some are also remarkably unhygienic and slightly impractical. And having endured the dining hell of feasting from a number of these substitutes to the classic white plate, it’s not only Ross McGinnes who has a severe dislike for such nonsense. The classroom sound reminiscent of nails running down a chalkboard, which ensues as cutlery slips and slides across an overhyped roof tile, and of Ice Cream melting straight onto the table: these are never desirable dining experiences. It’s easy to play the blame game for this preposterous fad, some blame celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver, while some blame Britain’s phony “gastropubs”. I, however, believe that social media is entirely responsible. Eating out used to be special, a time to socialize and a time to tantalise your taste buds with some incredible food that you’re unable to recreate at home. Nowadays, it’s unlikely that 95 per cent of diners are unable to endure a whole dining experience without the aid of a mobile phone. Mobile phones that we use to take pictures of our foods and share with our friends and followers on social media platforms such as Instagram (Instascran), Facebook and Twitter. Therefore, it’s a natural move for Chefs and Restaurateurs to strive to make offerings from the kitchen look as interesting as. Source: tle-online.com
