Naperville project collecting birthday supplies for needy kids - Chicago Daily Herald

Not everyone has those advantages, the Naperville woman has realized. But now, approaching her 33rd birthday, she's trying to provide all the fixings of a great celebration to as many birthday boys and girls as she can. With a project called Let Them Eat Cake, Schultz aims to collect 100 complete "birthday bags" to donate to Loaves & Fishes Community Services in Naperville. The bags contain birthday decorations, party favors, invitations and thank-you cards, balloons, streamers, plastic cutlery and paper plates, and of course, cake mix and frosting, so families in need can provide well-stocked celebrations for their... "For me, it's about making a child smile and letting them have the kind of great birthday that I was blessed to have as a kid," Schultz said. "Sometimes people really don't think about the fact that people can't afford to give a birthday party with all the trimmings. Schultz's service project began in 2012 before her 30th birthday, when she ran a food drive for Loaves & Fishes in conjunction with its annual Day Without Hunger celebration. Jody Bender, who worked for Loaves & Fishes before she recently moved to Michigan, said Schultz's donation was the second-largest for the event that year, but the initial donation only contained a few birthday supplies. Schultz, work works as a communications specialist for the city of Naperville, said one of her college friends zeroed in on the idea of donating birthday supplies and ran a similar drive for her own summer birthday. Seeing the success of her friend's birthday supplies drive, Schultz decided she liked the creativity of providing party materials in various themes of movie characters, cartoons or superheroes. In 2014, her first official Let Them Eat Cake collection brought in enough donations and supplies to create 65 complete birthday bags for Loaves & Fishes, and Bender said the pantry was impressed. "I had no idea the magnitude she would come in with. She happened to come in on a day when the shelves had almost no birthday bags on them," Bender said. "She came up with the most astonishing bags of birthday goods. Loaded into a van, an SUV and a car, the bags made a large display, Schultz said. But even with coupon clipping, online shopping, dollar store hunting and every other cost-saving measure she can think of, the bags don't come cheap. They often cost between $15 and $30, so she's. Six of the nation's largest school districts dump polystyrene trays - Washington Post

This article has been updated. Six of the largest U. S. school districts have pooled their collective purchasing power to make significant changes to school lunch, and they’re starting by jettisoning the polystyrene tray. The Urban School Food Alliance, a coalition that includes the school systems of New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami-Dade, Dallas and Orlando, has commissioned a school lunch dish that is made from recycled newsprint and can be turned into... The plate replaces trays made from polystyrene — most commonly known by the Dow Chemical brand name Styrofoam — a petroleum-based plastic that gets buried in landfills after use. Polystyrene, which can remain intact for hundreds of years, leaches pollutants into the water and air and is a major source of marine debris. (Dow notes that though many people erroneously refer to polystyrene drink and food containers as Styrofoam, the company’s material is not used to make food containers and instead is used as construction and insulation material and for floral and... For those reasons, communities around the country are increasingly banning polystyrene containers — including the District, where the city’s restaurants and food trucks will have to give up foam plastic containers by January and the school system... The Montgomery County Council voted in January to ban polystyrene containers by 2017, and the county’s school system has stopped using foam food-service trays. [ Montgomery schools ending the era of the foam lunch tray ]. Still, school districts across the country have clung to polystyrene trays because they are cheaper than compostable containers, costing an average of four cents each compared with 12... But the six members of the Urban School Food Alliance leveraged economies of scale and commissioned a compostable tray at a cost of 4. 9 cents each. “We decided to grow our way out of a problem, to use our power as buyers to join with other large cities and use that purchasing power to move the market,” said Eric Goldstein, chief executive of the Office of School Support Services at the New... “It started out being three times more expensive, but now it’s a wash. South Bend 150 organizers aim for a 'green' party - South Bend Tribune

The goal is to have a "zero waste" event, finding ways to compost or recycle everything possible. Zero waste initiatives include:. • Creating the SB 150 app, available for Apple and Android products, to minimize need for paper programs. Available from their respective marketplace sites. • Using 100 percent biodiesel to power the Taste of South Bend area. • Making available bicycle parking at each entrance, along with remote parking available with free shuttle service to the festival. Transpo also will provide free bus service on Saturday throughout the city. • Encouraging food and drink vendors to use compostable or recyclable containers for serving, such as replacing plastic bowls (for serving chili and soups) with bread bowls and using cones for ice cream. Where plates, cups, bowls, cutlery, etc. are necessary, food vendors are encouraged not to use Styrofoam or non-recyclable plastics. Food vendors also are encouraged to offer finger foods so as to use fewer utensils (e. g. sandwiches, pizza, wraps, fries, kabobs, sushi, egg rolls). Finger food items generate a minimal amount of waste for either trash or recycling. • Providing free filling stations for water bottles in Howard Park and the Taste of South Bend areas. South Bend Brew Werks will provide water bottle filling at Seitz Park. • Placing recycling, food waste and landfill bins throughout the event, and having "Waste Watcher" volunteers stationed around the campus to help people sort their waste items. Culver Duck will use the food waste collected from the event to create energy for its facility. Republic Recycling, along with Waste Away Group in Elkhart, are donating the hauling and tipping fees for all of the recyclable items collected from the public. The South Bend Bureau of Solid Waste provided dumpsters and is hauling recycling and waste. Republic Recycling is providing free dumpsters and hauling for all the SB150 single stream recycling and cardboard collected from vendors. Jamil Packaging, Welch Packaging and Waste Away Group donated the cardboard bins that will be placed around the event campus to collect items. Source: www.southbendtribune.com
