anley Burke sits at his kitchen table, sipping a cup of coffee. Literature piles up precariously around him, from 1960s African art magazines to Gloria Gaynor’s memoir, and the radio plays softly in the background. But this domestic scene is not all that it seems. While the objects that surround Burke – from the colanders to the cutlery to the tribal masks – are his own, the walls where they hang do not belong to the Birmingham tower block he normally calls home. Instead, for the next three months, all the worldly possessions of one of the most important black British photographers will reside in Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery. The exhibition is one of the most unusual and challenging shows ever put on by the Ikon. The public will be able to walk through an identical recreation of the flat where Burke lives – and which, since 1997, he has turned into a living archive of untold black British history, from slavery and early Windrush migrants to the social... Every inch of his kitchen, living room, bedroom and study is erected in the Ikon’s gallery space. Burke’s vast collection of music, art, photography , books, broken trinkets and oddities have been placed exactly as they are in his own treasure trove of a home, for visitors to peruse at their will. “My observations of migration and settlement are that in time, history gets disrupted and can be lost as it is superseded by a new generation of people,” says Burke. “So the idea of collecting these objects is to represent those times, and how this particular group of people struggled to establish themselves. It’s about saving material that can be referenced by future generations. It’s about recording an immigrant history that otherwise may go forgotten. Burke, who was born in Jamaica in 1951 and moved to Birmingham in 1965, began establishing himself as one of the foremost photographers of the British black community in the 1970s. At a time when black immigrants were customarily alienated and... Many municipalities and their residents might be surprised by the scale of coal industry spending that goes on in their own backyards, including those in Metro Vancouver far from the mines themselves. While the 26,000 jobs and $3. 2 billion annually in economic activity that the industry is responsible for might be better known publicly, a recent survey of spending by Coal Alliance member mines and terminals reveals that more than half of B. C.... Again, these figures represent spending by Coal Alliance member terminals and mines only, and not the entire B. C. coal industry. Much of this spending is with small and medium-sized businesses that supply equipment, materials and services for daily operations – everything from environmental consultants and equipment manufacturers to local catering services. The economic benefits of coal filter into a huge cross-section of B. C. society. But the benefits of coal go well beyond the economic arguments. The fact is, we all rely on B. C. ’s coal industry in much more direct ways as well. Most of the coal mined here in our province is steel-making coal, and steel is an essential part of our daily lives. With summer upon us and many families heading out across B. C. on holiday, take a moment and think about it. Is camping in one of British Columbia’s scenic parks part of your summer plan. Everything from the tent trailer and the car hauling it, to the portable barbeque and the pots and cutlery you’ll eat with has steel in it. Maybe roughing it isn’t in your plans. Instead you’ll head out onto the ocean or one of the thousands of lakes in B. C. for a little boating or fishing. In the dining room at Queensmill , a west London school for children with autism , spotting the truly extraordinary moments can be tricky. Matthew, for example, sits at a table wearing ear protectors in a dazzling shade of Day-Glo green, but there’s nothing extraordinary about that. They’re used to reduce the sensory inputs he might otherwise find overwhelming. Like a number of the kids here, he wears them every day. No, the really extraordinary thing is also the most banal: it’s the full plate of food in front of him, the one that he’s busy clearing. “This was a boy who was eating so little he’d become a cause for serious concern,” says Jude Ragan, headteacher of Queensmill. “It was all about how we could get him to eat three or four chickpeas. We worried about anorexia. Now look at him. The explanation for Matthew’s newfound enthusiasm for his lunch, and for what Ragan describes quite simply as a revolution in her school, is standing behind the counter at the other end of the plain white dining room. He’s a Brazilian man called Djalma Lucio Polli de Carvalho – Lucio for short – and he’s their chef. “I never used to look forward to lunch at school,” Ragan says. “Then Lucio arrived and now I do. He just makes us smile at lunchtime. The benefit he brings to us is incalculable. This is not merely another story of a school meals service revolutionised by the arrival of a trained chef, determined to prepare everything from scratch. It’s also about the vital therapeutic role good food can play in the lives of a community that needs it most. It is about the pleasures of the table that so many of us take for granted being extended to people for whom the commonplace is a struggle. And it’s about preparing vulnerable children for the realities of life beyond school. Queensmill, near Shepherd’s Bush in west London, has around 140 pupils between the ages of two and 19. Many are non-verbal, and use pictogram-based systems – both electronic and paper-based – to communicate. As Ragan puts it, they are children with “autism which causes them severe and significant difficulties”. Many autistic people, and their carers, campaign tirelessly against the stigmatisation of the condition. As a result there’s an understandable instinct to keep the narrative as positive as possible.
