tepping into the Oval Room, just down the street from the White House, you immediately know it is a serious restaurant. The staff is polished, the atmosphere hushed, the tablecloths crisp and white. The clientele of this power-dining mainstay includes high-profile politicos and business leaders. Executive chef John Melfi’s menu is refined and sophisticated: Cara cara oranges pep tuna sashimi, foie gras is speckled with cacao nib granola, and smoked avocado puree and strawberry jam accompany the venison. Basically, it’s the kind of place you would never take a small child. And yet here we were, armed with diaper bags, distractions galore — and our 2-year-old sons. What were we thinking. We know there are rules (written and not) about children in certain dining rooms. Diners have strong feelings about young eaters, and the thought of being judged — publicly and privately — was daunting. In 2014, after a couple brought a crying 8-month-old to Chicago’s prestigious Alinea, chef Grant Achatz sparked an Internet hatestorm when he considered banning children from the restaurant. [ Pack to distract, and other tips for dining with toddlers. But as food writers with young children (coincidentally, boys the same age), we knew as soon as they were born that we would want to expose them to a different level of dining early in their lives. Frankly, we believe children should be able to dine almost anywhere — well, perhaps anywhere except once-in-a-lifetime places such as Minibar or the Inn at Little Washington — as long as they behave appropriately, don’t diminish anyone else’s... [ Advocates to restaurants: Stop with the kids’ menus, already. We started taking the boys to restaurants when they were as young as 6 weeks. Back then, it was easy. They would arrive in a car seat or stroller and sleep through most of the meal. When they grew into toddlers, though — more mobile and more vocal — restaurants with fine china, hipster crowds and extensive wine lists faded from both our families’ dining agendas. Did they have to. We didn’t want to wait for puberty before returning to some of our favorite places to eat. So we decided there was no way to know until we tried — and booked test meals at three restaurants with different personalities. We set up ground rules to be fair to the boys, the restaurants, our fellow diners and ourselves:. Source: www.washingtonpost.com
It was the first time a doorman had ever welcomed me to a place with plastic cutlery. The presence of one of Grand Trunk’s well-suited gentlemen — one with salt-and-pepper hair by the name of Edwin Rivera — is the first reason that many guests coming to the restaurant pause to collect their thoughts at the door. The second is, well, everything else in their line of vision: faux-crocodile banquettes with rhinestone tufting. Dozens of chandeliers. Televisions on the floors, walls and ceilings, and retro-futuristic swivel chairs surrounding a tandoor oven enclosed within a semi-circular counter that could double as a spaceship’s mission control desk. Every surface is covered in stimuli. Even the toilets, with heated seats and an adjustable bidet, are fancy. That’s all before you walk down the vertigo-inducing see-through staircase to an underground lair with light-up floors that gives off the simultaneous vibes of Bollywood movie, Las Vegas nightclub and set of “ 2001: A Space Odyssey. ” Because there are more than 70 TVs playing at any given time, the room is frenzied with distraction. “Are you watching the floor or the wall. ” asked one friend. With each one on a different channel, programming ranges from “The Bachelor” to the movie “Baby Mama” to all of the off-putting pharmaceutical commercials that air after prime time: “Side effects may include dizziness. ” That’s for sure. One of my fellow diners dubbed it “the panic room. Needless to say, there’s a lot to unpack here. The restaurant is named for the Grand Trunk Road, one of the longest and oldest roads in Asia. For thousands of years, it’s led weary traders and travelers from Bangladesh to Afghanistan — and ferried culinary traditions along the same route. Rudyard Kipling, in his novel “ Kim ,” said the road was “such a river of life as nowhere else exists in the world. There sure isn’t anything else like this in the District. Grand Trunk revels in its contradictions: High-concept design for unfussy Indian food. expensive decor for a menu where nothing costs more than $10. hints of India’s past and present. Co-owner Kamran Cheema said that most of the restaurant’s fixtures — like a 3,000-pound community table carved from a single tree — were custom-made. He spent seven figures on the Indiana Avenue restaurant’s construction, and personally oversaw the design, which is aligned with his self-described “eccentric” personal style. The menu is a little.
